<image:title>/ The Memorials - Some reflections on the Memorials</image:title>
<image:caption>Douglas Holmes September 11, 1995 Alameda, California The Memorials, eight free-standing metal and wood relief sculptures, comprise a body of work concerned with society's reactions to war and violent political unrest. The source material and inspiration has been Ireland, both it's historical upheavals and the current "troubles" revolving around Northern Ireland. The metaphors in the sculpture are architectural, in particular openings, doors and windows, and constructed memorials. Although the works are inspired by particular politics, my intent is for them to address a much wider audience than just those people concerned with Ireland. This group of eight sculptures has evolved over a three year period from 1985 to 1988. They are large, on the order of 8-1/2' x 4' x 2-1/2' , free standing reliefs. The materials are primarily corrugated steel panels and oriented strand board (a type of composite wood sheeting similar to plywood). Each sculpture is finished with a semi-opaque stain applied over reflective silver paint. Their eight titles - Northern Window - Cenotaph for the Forgotten. - Marker - Between North and South - Belfast Pieta - The Citizens - Heaney's doorstep - Memorial to the Long-Term Memory April 24, 1916 – November 8, 1987 Offer oblique clues to specific events and situations that have inspired them. Although a clue, the titles do not delineate the content of the sculptures. The forms, the juxtaposition of materials, and the relationship and reference to architecture are intended to evoke both a response from the viewer and elicit an empathy that will cause the viewer to question the whys of the sculptures. The basic and unifying reason for these sculptures is my concern with the war that goes on in Ireland. It is my intention that these sculptures address the human condition in any situation where people are warring on one another. By using corrugated steel (a material found in nearly every culture, serving the common purpose of providing shelter and protection) as a human element, combining this element with an architectural reference, I hope to get a real sense of the purpose of "a memorial". This purpose is grounded on the condition of war and asks the viewer to reflect upon his or her responsibility toward that condition. It is this aspect of "a memorial" that I address in the following thoughts: •A memorial is a mnemonic device. In addressing the memory it reminds us to keep alive that which we may want to wish away. •A memorial is a device that keeps the past as part of the present. •A memorial can be a monument, but is not necessarily one. A monument marks as event, an idea, a place and then with time tends to supplant that event, idea or place. How many of us know what L'Arch de Triomphe or the Washington Monument represents? Yet, a simple headstone at a grave serves as memorial to a life. Even if we cannot read the words on it, it marks a person's life by placing a punctuation at the end. •Memorials are addressed to something. Specific events that effect unspecified people. •An event lives in time, is transitory in space so must be marked in place to survive as a reality. Events are only real as they happen, then they pass into memory. The effects of the event are lasting in a physical way. The windows covered after a bomb explodes, the dead and injured, the fear that begins to in inform all decisions. The memorial makes us remember the event that caused these and question the ideas behind that event. •The memorial can serve as a persistent collective consciousness.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Untitled (for K.) - March 1981 thoughts about the lead reliefs</image:title>
<image:caption>That an artist's work is both public and private is a basic contradiction both you and I have to accept. The work that you see here has some personal meaning that I have no hope or desire for you to understand, yet to share the commonality of our experience is at its core. My work refers to, but seldom is, a specific thing. I want you to to feel remembrances being pulled to the surface. The lead reliefs in this series have come to be in waves, and like a wave I have gone back into them to change and re-order. A few quiet moments of contemplation, a few visual references were expanded into a group of sculptures whose interrelationship is akin to that of poems in a collection. Although they were worked on in the presence of my large sculptures, they were approached as separate. They came to be by the assertion of their abilities to make their meanings known. Outweighed and outsized by their studio mates they turned inward and concentrated their content, refusing to become sketches or models. Their titles are meant to lead not explain.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Derry - the Derry Suite</image:title>
<image:caption>Eight photographic sculptures based on two photographs. These two photographs were taken in the town of Derry (Londonderry) Northern Ireland in 1988. The photographs show one of the four gates built in 1618 that lead in and out of the walled center city. The gate in the photographs is Castle Gate, the gate nearest the Bogside District, where the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association marchers were denied entrance to the center city in 1968 because the Protestant minority that dominated city government had declared it off limits to the Catholic majority. This confrontation and the Battle of the Bogside in 1969 are seen by most as the start of “The Troubles”. These events led directly to the tragedy of Bloody Sunday on January 30, 1972. In the two photographs, The Gate and The Wall, that form the center of each pair of photographic sculptures, we see Castle Gate as it was in 1988. Access to the wall above the gate is barricaded so that militants on both sides of “The Troubles” can not use it as a vantage point from which to rain terror on each other and anyone caught between them. It is from this wall around the ancient city center with its four gates that Protestant hecklers have traditionally taunted the Catholic residents of the Bogside area. In pair #1, you see these two central photographs surrounded by “snapshots” of various sites in Ireland that show doors, windows, openings in and between buildings closed and barricaded. In Gate 1, the “snapshots" are of contemporary sites, a result of the current conflict. In Wall 1, the “snapshots” are of much older sites, some dating as far back as the Iron Age, evidence of the history of humankind’s need to protect and close out. In pair #2, you see the photographs disassembled and suspended on glass in front of the whole photograph in a manner that calls up images of the cross and of being targeted. The image of being targeted is reinforced by the red cross hairs on the front most panel of glass. In pair #3, you see the photographs mounted on corrugated steel panels, the material that is so much in evidence as the material of choice used to form the barricades that are the subject of the photographs themselves. The same material that is used throughout the world as a quick, easy, and inexpensive way to protect, close, and separate. In pair #4, you see the photographs by themselves as they might be exhibited in a gallery or museum, removed from any context other than the referents within. When exhibited, the pairs in The Derry Suite are shown across from each other, the walls on one side and the gates on the other progressing from pair #1 to pair #4.</image:caption>

<image:title>Zen stations of the cross - Zen Stations of the Cross</image:title>
<image:caption>The sculptures that you see here are part of a series that I did in response to writings by Shunryu Suzuki in Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind. Specifically they are a response to the titles of the chapters in the book. After reading this book, I printed the titles on individual sheets of paper and hung them on a wall in my studio. As I looked at them and thought about the ideas that Suzuki discussed in each chapter and how I felt about these ideas, I would place objects that I had gathered over the years with each title. In addition, specific people, both artists and others that have been inspirational to me, would come to mind as connected with certain ideas. These are the names that you see in some of the titles. While working in the studio, I would stop frequently and consider these word/idea/object/people relationships. I had no intention of developing this into a body of work, rather it has been a form of visual thought and meditation on the ideas presented in the writings, a private conversation. Several people who saw this wall of words and objects in the studio felt strongly about the implications and ideas being formed and encouraged me to develop them into finished work.   </image:caption>

<image:title>Zen stations of the cross - some notes regarding the zen pieces 11/24/03</image:title>
<image:caption>• all of the pieces have their titles incorporated in the work itself. • the glass panel in The Density of Experience… reads the thinning of language against the density of our experience. This is the only piece not from a chapter title in the book Zen Mind, Beginners Mind, this is an idea put forth by Richard Sasson during a graduate seminar that he taught while I was in graduate school at California College of Arts and Crafts. An idea that has been a driving force in my work since. • the Sartre quote (from St. Genet) in Single-minded Way is “Elegance is the quality of conduct which transforms the greatest amount of being into appearing...” The notebook/drawing book is one that I have used for years and has among other things most of the ideas and sketches for the zen series in it. the pages are now glued together so all of it, save for what you see, is sealed from view. • all of the background/supports are the same size (14” x 14” x 4”) and made of 10 gauge steel either powder coated or painted. Using the same format for each of the pieces allowed me to concentrate on the content. • The Quality of Being contains a note that Marie Larson gave to me soon after I met her in 1962. The note says “the tender and passionate interest felt by all men in early youth and which is the artists birthright thru life” The original is sealed in a glassine envelope at the top of the piece and what you see is a reproduction of the original. I have had this pinned up in every studio that I have had since Marie gave it to me. • the pattern you see on the 2nd layer of glass in Repetition is the word repetition repeated over and over, i.e. repetition! • the form in the middle of Constancy, is a rock from an area called the Burren in Ireland. It is a strange area of limestone formation and very lonely, timeless, and beautiful. For me a very peace giving place.</image:caption>

      <image:title>/ UCSF Sculpture - Endless Horizon...</image:title>
<image:caption>When the hematology transfusion unit was on the fifth floor, it was not a comforting or pleasant place to be. The chairs in the waiting room put us in a single line along the windows with our backs against the spectacular view. When the plans for the new fourth floor were announced, it was exciting to learn that the waiting area would be open and the seating would be aligned to allow us to see the magnificent panorama just outside this room. My intention for this sculpture is to encourage people to find interest in the piece, to sense its landscape references and follow those forms out past the window as the layers in the sculpture fade away. As a patient in both spaces, I have spent a fair amount of time here, waiting – and watching others waiting. I have hope that this sculpture will encourage people to look outward, both with our eyes and our interest, and away from ourselves. It is difficult being up here in this waiting room because it reminds us of what we have undergone and the possibilities of more treatment ahead. The experience of looking out toward the Marin Headlands, the Golden Gate, the bay and ocean can be truly transporting. It can shift our focus, even if briefly, toward the big and away from the personal. This is what I am hoping for. I do not want the sculpture to call attention to itself as ART. I would be happiest if people did not remember the sculpture for itself but rather how it gave them some solace and inspiration and release as they contemplated it.
